Okawville Grad Receives National Educators Award

Dr. Brandy Hempen has received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, the highest honors bestowed by the U.S. government specifically for K-12 teachers.

She was honored for her teaching at Germantown Grade School. In her ten years there she taught third, fifth, seventh and eighth grades  and served as the curriculum coordinator.

The selection process was based on nominees application process of demonstrating content knowledge of the subjects they teach and ability to motivate and enable students to be successful in those areas.

The recipients receive a certificate signed by the President of the United States, a paid trip to Washington D.C. to attend a series of recognition events and professional development opportunities, and a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation. The recipients also have an opportunity to build lasting partnerships with colleagues across the nation.
