Former Hoyleton Resident Had Time of His Life on Wheel of Fortune

By Travis Volz

Though it was never on his bucket list, a Hoyleton native had the experience of a lifetime when he appeared on Wheel of Fortune last Wednesday.

Doug Michael said that his audition video was shot on a whim last year and was anything but earnest.

“I was watching the show with my wife and daughter and they showed contact information about how to get on the show,” Michael said. “My daughter Andrea pointed a camera at me, and I did the audition video right there.”

Though his first instinct was to be polite, Michael said he did the opposite. He called the resulting audition video “ridiculous.”

Whether the tape was ridiculous or not, it must have stood out, as Michael said he received an e-mail from producers to set up an initial interview over Zoom in early August. Then on August 18, he got an invitation to a September taping.

In the intervening days, Michael said he did a crash course in Wheel of Fortune game play. He says his wife Sarah was better at solving puzzles, and his daughter Andrea told him, “This is your job. Watch old episodes.”
