The Okawville High cheerleaders will be back to what they love – sort of.
The Illinois High School Association will allow cheerleading with COVID restrictions when abbreviated basketball starts in February.
Cheerleaders will only cheer at home games. Since fans won’t be able to attend, they will be cheering in a nearly empty gym. Fans will be able to watch the game on life-streaming.
The squad will not be able to cheer on the basketball court, as they normally would do before a game and between quarters. That means no school song and building pyramids.
Since the cheerleaders must stay a certain distance from the court, they will be moved from the sideline to another place in the gym.
They also must stay six feet from each other and wear masks.
Coach Amy Welch said that she is grateful the squad will have the opportunity. “We have five seniors, and I want them to have some type of season. I am grateful for what we get.”
The cheerleaders began practice Monday, February 1.
