Okawville American Legion to Break Ground on New Building

Okawville American Legion Post 233 plans to break ground on a new building in December to replace the old hall that was closed for safety reasons.

At the beginning of 2019, a portion of the current building’s roof collapsed. A committee made up of members of the American Legion, Sons of the Legion, and the Ladies’ Auxiliary determined that it made more sense to build a new structure than to repair the old one.

“After a thorough review of overall cost, the structural integrity of the existing building, and concerns of future mechanical failures and maintenance, the committee recommended to build a new building as a long-term solution,” said building committee member Roger Wilfong in a press release.

The new structure, which is budgeted to cost approximately $400,000, will be built on the parking lot just west of the current building. The front door will face east, giving it a view of the flag pole once the old building is demolished.
