The Illinois High School Association Board of Directors announced last week to expand the IHSA State Series in two fall sports, adding a second round of postseason play in boys and girls golf and boys and girls cross country to be held this month.
Both sports were each initially scheduled to culminate their respective seasons after IHSA Regional meets, but will now conclude their respective seasons after the Sectional round.
In boys golf, Okawville will host the regional, and the top two teams and top four individuals will advance to Zeigler (Z.-Royalton) Sectional at Franklin County Country Club in West Frankfort October 13.
Lady Rocket golfers will travel to Acorns Golf Links in Waterloo for the Gibault Regional. The two top teams and four best individuals will then compete in the Salem Sectional at Salem Country Club on October 12.
Okawville cross country runners compete at the Freeburg Regional at Smithton Community Park on October 24. Five teams from the Freeburg Regional will advance to the Belleville Althoff Sectional at Swansea Clinton Hill Conservation Park October 31.
IHSA staff attempted to maintain COVID regions and keep participant levels as low as possible when making assignments, but in some cases, generally those involving schools on or near a COVID border, schools were assigned to a tournament outside of their COVID region.
The board also created an exemption to the season limitation rule to allow for participation in the cross country sectionals, while temporarily modifying terms and conditions for both sports to allow greater flexibility in scheduling the respective meets.
