Cahokia Conference Looking to Expand, and Okawville is Part of the Plan

By Travis Volz

After thinking about it for weeks, Okawville athletic director Jon Kraus came to the conclusion that there was no good reason not to accept the invitation to join the Cahokia Conference.

Kraus, who also serves as the head coach for the boys’ basketball team, said that he thinks the decision is in the best interest of every athlete.

“I think it’s the right time for us to do it,” Kraus said. “I was thinking if it was good for eight of the ten programs, it would be the right thing to do, but I think it will be good for all of them.

Since the 1970s, Okawville has been an independent school in athletics, but that is becoming more difficult as conferences get larger.

“More and more teams are in conferences, so that takes up a lot of their games and makes it harder for us to play a full schedule,” Kraus said.
