Immanuel Lutheran School in Okawville announced plans for eighth grade graduation activies last this month.
Principal Dennis Fancher said that he has two events tentatively planned, beginning with a drive-by parade at the school on May 23 at 2 p.m.
“We’re calling it the ‘Drive-by, Honk and Wave: It’s a graduation Parade,’” Fancher said.
Students will line up in the parking lot in front of the school along Hanover Street on Saturday, May 23. Family, friends and well-wishers can drive by students and honk their horns to congratulate eighth graders moving on to high school without violating social distancing guidelines.
“A lot of schools have done something like this, and we’re keeping it informal,” Fancher said. “We want to do something to show the kids we care and congratulate them.”
The informal parade will be followed later in the summer by a more formal ceremony at the church.
“Once restrictions are eased, we’re planning a regular graduation some time later this summer,” Fancher said. “We’re doing two things because we didn’t want this year’s graduates to feel left out.”
No date has been set for the regular graduation. Fancher said the school will put the word out once the state opens things up to larger gatherings.
In the meantime, a congratulatory parade is a chance for the community to congratulate graduates during the pandemic.
