Thefts from Vehicles Includes A Handgun

Okawville Police Chief Steve Millikin is advising residents to lock their car doors at night following a series of break-ins in the area, including in Okawville.

Millikin said that two vehicles were broken into on Henrietta Street in the overnight hours of February 29 and March 1. Among the items reported stolen was a handgun.

“The two vehicles were targets of opportunity,” Millikin said. “The people who did this look for unlocked doors, and we’ve not had any forced entry into the vehicles.”

In addition to the handgun, several other small items were reported stolen from the vehicles.

Millikin said that similar incidents have been reported in St. Libory and other small towns in the area.

“The people who are doing this are looking for easy targets, and if you lock the doors, they will probably move on,” Millikin said.

In addition to locking doors on cars and trucks left out over night, Millikin advises citizens to not leave valuables in their vehicles.
