Primary Election Day Tuesday, March 17 in Illinois
Washington County voters will head to the polls for the 2020 General Primary Election Tuesday, March 17.
Non Partisan Vote
Voters in the Addieville Fire Protection District will vote whether the District shall issue $1.4 million in bonds for construction of a new fire station. (An article in last week’s paper explained the need.)
A house with a $100,000 market value would have an increase in taxes of about $125 a year.
Republican Ballot
Republican voters will decide on the party’s candidate for Washington County State’s Attorney. (There is no Democrat nominee)
Incumbent Dan Bronke will face a challenge from Daniel Janowski in one of the few contested races in the county.
Incumbent Republican Cindy Barczewski is running for reelection as circuit clerk, and Republican Mark Styninger will seek another term as county coroner. They will not have opponents in the general election.
In county board races, Republican incumbent Larry Unverfehrt’s name is on the ballot in District 1, Leo Barczewski and David Ibendahl are seeking another term in District 2, and incumbent Eric Brammeier is on the ballot in District 3. Incumbents Vic Shubert and Paul Todd are write-in candidates.
Republican Charlie Meier is running unopposed for another term in the 108th District of the Illinois General Assembly.
Five Republican candidates are vying for office in the 115th District of the General Assembly: Zachary Meyer, John Howard, Johnny Ray Smith, Clifford Lindemann and Paul Jacobs.
Incumbent State Pep of the 115th District, Terri Bryant, is unopposed in the primary and general election for State Senator in the 58th District.
The retirement of longtime Congressman John Shimkus has resulted in a field of four candidates seeking the Republican Party’s nominee for the 15th Congressional District: Kerry Wolff, Darren Duncan, Mary Miller and Chuck Ellington.
In judicial races, Republicans David Overstreet and John Barberis, Jr. are vying to fill the vacancy of Judge Lloyd Karmeier in the Illinois Supreme Court’s 5th Judicial District, and Mark Boie and Katherine Ruocco are running for Appellate Court Judge in the 5th Judicial District.
Democratic Ballot
Two Democrats are running for seats on the Washington County Board in District 1: Dennis Shemonic and Kathy Muenter.
Kacie Weicherding is running unopposed to be the Democratic nominee in the 108th District of the Illinois General Assembly.
Four candidates are seeking to be the Democratic Party’s nominee for the 15th Congressional District: Craig Morton, Kevin Gaither, Erika Weaver and John Hursey, Jr.
Incumbent United States Senator Richard Durbin is running unopposed.
Democrats running in judicial races are Judy Cates for Judge Karmeier’s seat on the Illinois Supreme Court, and Sarah Smith for judge of the 5th Judicial District Appellate Court.
