The 1970 Okawville Rockets: Looking Back 50 Years

On February 18, at the Rockets’ last home game of the season, the 1970 Rockets team will be recognized. Coach David Luechtefeld will share some thoughts and introduce the players and cheerleaders.
The 1970 Rockets were the first basketball team from Okawville High School to win Regional, Sectional, and Supersectional championships, advance to the Elite Eight, and go to state. They compiled a record of 29 wins and only 2 losses.
In 1970, the high school boys’ basketball state tournament was played at the University of Illinois Assembly Hall in Champaign. Only eight teams, the “Elite Eight,” made the trip each year.
