Okawville Rockets’ coach Jon Kraus thinks this season will have highs and lows. And that is just in the team picture.
This year’s Okawville team will have a couple of bigs, but most of the squad will be six foot or less.
“We don’t really have many mid-size players,” Kraus said. “We’ve got a couple guys that are 6-foot-6 or bigger, but pretty much everyone else is around six feet or a little shorter.”
It will also be a junior-heavy squad. Jackson Heckert and Ethan Bening are the only two seniors, and Kraus thinks only one sophomore, Ethan Riechmann, will dress for the varsity squad.
Kraus says that his big man, the 6-foot-9 Heckert, will be a big part of his team’s identity this year.

With most of the starting lineup from last year having graduating in the spring, this year’s Okawville Lady Rockets team will have a lot of growing pains.
Okawville coach Michelle Hasheider-Burianek knows that she will be relying on players without a lot of varsity experience, so she expects things to look better at the end of the year than at the beginning.
“I’m sure we will make some mistakes early, but that’s all part of it,” she said. “We lost a lot of varsity minutes from last year, so the experience won’t be there.”
The fact that several players are dealing with nagging injuries only adds to the uncertainty surrounding the team.
Only six upperclassmen are on the roster this year. Delaney Toensing started some games last year, and Megan Schleifer and Grace Foster will be angling for playing time too.
