Mathilda “Tillie” Alvina Hackstadt
Mathilda Alvina Hackstadt, nee Eigenrauch, of Okawville, IL departed this life at 8:35 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, 2019 at Washington County Hospital in Nashville, IL surrounded by her family. She had attained the age of 100 years, 6 months, and 23 days.
She was born in Plum Hill Township on October 16, 1918, the daughter of Henry and Anna Schumacher Eigenrauch. She was baptized November 17, 1918 at St. John’s Evangelical Church in Cordes, IL by Rev Aug Bock; she was confirmed on Palm Sunday, March 20, 1932 at St John’s United Church of Christ, Plum Hill by Rev. Ludwig Rauch and her memory verse was Psalms 37:4. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elwin Hackstadt whom she married on October 18, 1947 at St. John’s Plum Hill by Rev F. W. Weltge, and who died on January 21, 1996.
As a teenager, Mathilda often helped families in the local area, in St. Louis and Worden, IL by working as a live-in infant caregiver. She taught Sunday School in German for a number of years and worked at the Sandal Craft Shoe Factory in Okawville. Mathilda was a homemaker and farm wife where she helped with the livestock and operated farm equipment, from planting to harvest. She was a long-time member of St. John’s Plum Hill where she was still an active member of the Women’s Guild and also belonged to the Farm Bureau. She won many blue ribbons for her fruit and vegetable canning, enjoyed quilting with the Ladies Aid at Immanuel Lutheran Church, and enjoyed the companionship of others at the Okawville Senior Center. She loved to read, sew, quilt, and do yard work, but most of all loved to be with family and friends.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers and their spouses, Alvin & Lydia Eigenrauch, Raymond & Mildred Eigenrauch, Richard & Esther Eigenrauch, Elroy & Mildred Eigenrauch, Ewald Eigenrauch, and a sister Selma (Eigenrauch) & Everett Hassebrock. Also preceding her in death were in-laws Oscar & Mildred Hackstadt, Emil & Alvina Hackstadt, Bill & Olinda (Hackstadt) Eigenrauch, Edward & Amanda (Hackstadt) Ostendorf, Ted & Elma (Hackstadt) Heggemeier, and Edna Hackstadt in infancy.
Left to mourn her passing are two sons, Ronald (Paula) of Okawville and Hadley (Sandra) of Nashville; four grandchildren Valerie Sharpe (Ryan) of Champaign, Laura Cleary (Paul) of O’Fallon, Krissy Schneider (Jonathan) of Venedy, and Brett Hackstadt (Morganne) of Nashville; 7 great grandchildren Fiona Sharpe, Shaylyn and Emery Cleary, Hudson and Annley Schneider, and Parklyn and Gatlin Hackstadt; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be held at St. John’s United Church of Christ at Plum Hill on Thursday, May 16, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Don Jones officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call at the Campagna Funeral Home of Okawville on Wednesday, May 15 from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. and again on Thursday from 7:30 A.M. until 9:00 A.M. then at the church on Thursday from 10:00 A.M. until the service hour.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. John’s UCC Building Fund or the Okawville Senior Center and will be accepted by the Campagna Funeral Home.
