Location Change – 2019 Relay For Life This Friday At Nashville GRADE SCHOOL

The 2019 Washington County Relay for Life is set for this Friday, May 10 at the Nashville Grade School. This event, the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, has been held in Washington County since 1998, raising over $1 million locally for cancer research, education and patient services. Relay for Life celebrates, remembers and fights back against all forms of cancer.

This year’s celebration kicks off at 6pm with area survivors taking a celebration lap. Providing escort service will be the John C. Atchison Post 110 American Legion Color Guard, the Washington County Girl Scouts and the Washington County Boy Scouts. A dixieland-style band will provide music to pump up the walkers and those cheering them on.

Food trucks, a first for this Relay, will offer a variety of menus. Several Relay teams also have food stands, as well as cupcakes, snacks and drinks.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair to enjoy  entertainment by local children and teens. Jamie’s Tumblers perform at 6:30pm and Sonya’s Gotta Dance troupe follows immediately after. The NCHS Jazz Band will perform after the dancers.

One returning team, the local law enforcement, have their own unique fundraiser at the Relay. The law enforcement participants will ‘arrest’ people for ‘Jail&Bail’ to raise additional funds.

The highlight of the Relay is the Luminaria Ceremony. This is by far the favorite part of Relay for participants and on-lookers. This year’s Luminaria will begin at 9pm. Hundreds of luminary bags, decorated by local school children with the names of community members and loved ones who have battled cancer, are lit as a quiet reflective lap is held.

Prior to the luminaria lap, each of the names honored by a luminary is read. The reflective ceremony brings to life the true effect cancer has had on Washington County. Literally hundreds of names are read and attendees realize just how impacted local families are.

Please make plans to attend the 2019 Relay for Life in Nashville. If you are a survivor, registration info can be found at www.relayforlife.org or you can register at the event.
