Mary Steinkamp of rural Oakdale, IL departed this life in the Washington County Hospital in Nashville, IL on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at 4:58 A.M. after a sudden illness. She had attained the age of 81 years, 10 months and 29 days.
Mary was born on the family farm in Washington County, IL on February 25, 1937 the daughter of Edward and Catherine (nee Gross) Polczynski. She was a 1955 graduate of Nashville High School. She was united in marriage to Ordel Steinkamp in the St. John Evangelical Church in Mascoutah, IL on May 19, 1956 and he preceded her in death on November 20, 1997.
Mrs. Steinkamp was a farm wife and worked for the Illinois Department of Transportation as a laborer until her retirement in 2002. She was a faithful member of the St. Peter United Church of Christ in Stone Church, IL where she was active with the Mission in Action ladies. Mary also assisted in preparing funeral luncheons at Stone Church for many years. Mrs. Steinkamp was also a volunteer at the Irvington Food Pantry. Mary lived an active life and bowled in the Tuesday Night Bowling League in Bartelso. She also enjoyed quilting with the church ladies, playing Bingo, and was an avid Pinochle player.
Left to mourn her passing are her children, Mary Ann Degenhardt and husband Joe of Oakdale, Arnold Steinkamp and wife Pat of Bartelso, IL, Helen Meyer of Collinsville, IL, Robert Steinkamp and wife Diana of Oakdale and Lisa Renken of Collinsville; a brother, Don Polczynski and wife Helen of Nashville; a sister, Betty Polczynski of Helena, MT; ten grandchildren, Joe Degenhardt Jr (Casey Sharp), Jenn Tritschler (Jason), Crystal Degenhardt (Mike MacInnis), Mary Degenhardt (Craig Sroka), Nathan Steinkamp (Tahnee), Jonathan Steinkamp (Brianne), Zack Steinkamp, Michael Meyer, Kerri Dischbein (Brandon), and Christopher Steinkamp; five great grandchildren, Reagan Tritschler, Quintin Stanley, Garrett Steinkamp, Emmett Steinkamp and Colton Dischbein; several nieces and nephews as well as a host of friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Sylvester Polczynski; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at 11 A.M. from the St. Peter United Church of Christ in Stone Church with Pastor Cherie Stolze officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call at the St. Peter United Church of Christ in Stone Church on Friday from 5 P.M. until 8 P.M. and again on Saturday from 9 A.M. until the service hour.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Irvington Food Pantry or to the St. Peter United Church of Christ and will be accepted by the Campagna Funeral Home.
