The Washington County Board passed a resolution to become a “Gun Sanctuary County” at its meeting last week.

Board member Eric Brammeier explained that was needed so residents under age 21 would not be in violation of gun laws for owning a rifle/shotgun. Without gun sanctuary status, a minor would automatically be a felon for owning a long gun and forced to forfeit guns, Brammeier said. Other Illinois counties have adopted or have proposed the sanctuary status, he informed the board.
